From the open plains of the savannah, across the vast Kalahari Desert, to Africa’s lush tropical forests, Savane sources only the purest, highest-quality natural ingredients.
Savane was founded by Jennifer Peters (an American national and Harvard graduate in anthropology) and Stephan Helary (a Madagascan-born Frenchman with an extensive career in conservation, agriculture, and veterinary medicine). In 2006, the two friends formed a shared vision to develop an effective yet luxurious organic skincare range that would blend the ancient traditional knowledge of South African indigenous plants with modern green science. The next four years were spent in research and development, forming partnerships with like-minded organic suppliers, and getting the stamp of approval from organizations such as Phyto Trade and Ecocert.
It all started with Marula oil. Jennifer had been a beauty junkie, using lotions and serums of all kinds, none of which seemed to do as good a job as the Marula oil she borrowed from Stephan one day. One dab was all it took to get her hooked. “It was an aha! moment,” she says.
Savane’s formulations are safe for you and the environment and contain some of the most powerful natural anti-aging actives available to deliver the maximum benefits to your skin. Carefully crafted by experts and using the latest developments in green chemistry, Savane’s certified-organic formulations are free of harmful and toxic chemicals. They do not use animal or genetically modified ingredients, mineral oils, color additives, synthetic fragrances, or controversial preservatives.
“Rich in some of the most powerful natural antioxidants and deep penetrating essential fatty acids (omegas 3, 6 and 9),” says Stephan, “the Savane skincare range restructures, regenerates, and revitalizes your skin, protecting it against premature aging and restoring its natural balance.”
Savane’s first U.S. retail partner, Zaega, chose to team up with Savane after they met Jennifer and Stephan at a conference on sustainability 2009 and realized that their commitment to organic and sustainable business practices was genuine.
Some more facts about Savane from Jennifer and Stephan:
- The name Savane comes from the French word for savannah.
- All Savane products are certified organic by Ecocert and all ingredients are ethically sourced, using certified fair trade ingredients wherever possible.
- Women in Southern Africa use Marula oil as a treatment for dry skin and hair. In Swaziland, pregnant women and new mothers use it to reduce stretch marks.
RECYCLE, REDUCE, & REPAIR
Jennifer and Stephan chose aluminum packaging because it is unbreakable, lightweight, and endlessly recyclable, and it protects their certified-organic formulations from damaging UV light. While aluminum takes a lot of energy to make, it uses only 5% of this energy to recycle. Also, because it weighs so little, fuel consumption is greatly reduced when transporting. All of Savane’s packaging has been approved by Ecocert as safe and eco-friendly. Wherever possible, they’ve also done away with outer packaging. To reduce the use of paper, the bottles have no outer boxes. But when the use of paper or cardboard is necessary, they’ve chosen recyclable cardboard or locally sourced paper made from renewable sugar cane pulp.
