We don’t know about you, but our tin of St. Claire’s Organics Raspberry Tarts is already completely empty. We love these little candies and were so pleased to be able to include them in your summer Yuzen box. They offer such a bright pop of flavor, with both their fruity varieties and their minty ones. Here are some of St. Claire’s frequently asked questions:
What makes these candies/mints healthier than the rest?
St. Claire’s candies are fat-free, low-calorie, low-carb, and certified organic, which means all of the ingredients are grown without the use of pesticides or chemical fertilizers. It also means that there are no genetically modified organisms (GMO’s) included, and no harsh chemicals are used in the extraction of the delicious flavors or bright colors. St. Claire’s products are 100% vegetarian, and virtually allergen free (no casein, soy, dairy, gluten, wheat, eggs, fish or shellfish, corn, tree nuts or peanuts). They contain nothing artificial whatsoever.
Where do the flavors and colors come from then?
All flavors are made from essences (flavor extracts and essential oils) of the actual plant. For example, the lemon flavor is made from real lemons, raspberry from raspberries, etc. The colors are also made from plants—the watermelon and raspberry contain colorants made from red cabbage and black carrots. The lemon, tangerine, and peach contain turmeric and/or annatto seed extracts as colorants. And the Lime Tarts get their green hue from certified organic spinach.
Are they sugar-free?
No, but they are made without refined sugars. St. Claire’s uses certified organic molasses granules and evaporated cane juice, which have more complex molecular structures that will digest more slowly than traditional, refined sugar. Thus they won’t hit your bloodstream so fast and have you (or your kids) bouncing off the walls.
Are they safe for diabetics?
You and your doctor must determine this. We can tell you that many diabetics eat these products, but ultimately you must discuss them with your doctor prior to use. In all likelihood, your physician will approve of them.
What is the proper serving size?
For mints and tarts, the serving size is two pieces, which equals only about 12 calories total.
