Olive oil has dozens—maybe even hundreds—of uses, from cleaning car grease off your hands (mix one teaspoon olive oil with one teaspoon salt or sugar, apply to hands, and rub vigorously) to removing paint from your hair, polishing furniture, and reconditioning an old baseball mitt. And we all know how delicious and versatile it is in cooking, with the added bonus of providing us with essential antioxidants, phytosterols, and vitamins.
But one of the places where olive oil really shines is in the beauty world. Here are our top 6 ways to use olive oil in your beauty regimen:
As a hair treatment. It worked for the ancient Egyptians, and it will work for you. As a pre-shampoo treatment, slightly warm the olive oil in the microwave or by placing the container in hot water. Apply generously to the ends of your hair and to your scalp. Relax for 10-20 minutes, then shampoo it out. You may have to shampoo twice, but it will be worth it when you see how soft and shiny it made your hair.
As eye-makeup remover. Olive oil attaches itself to other oils and lifts them off, helping to keep pores from getting clogged. Dab some olive oil onto a cotton swab or cleansing pad and give it a try!
Instead of shaving cream. Olive oil not only helps your razor glide smoothly, but it conditions and moisturizes the skin. (Men can try this too!)
When you need to clean your makeup brushes. Ideally, makeup brushes should be cleaned every month or so. Mix up one part olive oil and two parts antibacterial soap, rub it into the bristles of the brush, then rinse thoroughly with warm water, squeeze gently, and lay flat to dry.
To soften lips. For a DIY lip scrub, mix a small amount of olive oil with coarse sugar; you can also add a splash of lemon juice for flavor. Gently rub it onto your lips, wait 5-10 minutes, and rinse (or lick!) off.
To soften and hydrate skin. The folks behind the Spa de Soleil Olive Essence Organic Body Butter (in the summer Yuzen box) know the secret of olive oil. They’ve combined it with other soothing oils, like soybean oil, grapeseed oil, and jojoba seed oil, to create this ultra- hydrating formula that moisturizes and protects skin from the harshest daily irritants like sun, wind, hard water, and environmental pollutants.
