We’re excited to have Mindful’s Anti-Aging Eye Serum in the Winter Yuzen Box! We’ve featured eye serums and creams before, and each time we do, we get a few questions from subscribers asking whether eye serums and creams are really necessary. So we did a little research, and we’ve broken it down into a simple question/answer format so you can determine what’s best for you and your skin.
Q: Do I really need a specialized formula just for my eyes? I use a really good facial moisturizer twice a day.
A: To some people, buying a product specifically for a very tiny area seems like a waste, especially if they’re using a high-quality formula for the rest of their face. Others believe that eye formulas are not a luxury but a necessity. We weren’t sure at first, but now we are now firmly in the latter camp. Here’s why: The skin around your eyes is not like the rest of the skin on your face—it’s very delicate, and much thinner, which means it’s more sensitive. Skin that’s more sensitive is more likely to react to the environment and has a harder time staying hydrated, resulting in issues like discoloration (dark circles), puffiness, and fine lines and wrinkles. Eye creams and serums are specially formulated to address all of these issues.
Q: Why do I get dark circles?
A: Dark circles can appear under your eyes for a variety of reasons, like stress, too much sun, aging, smoking, and good old genetics. Specialized eye formulas contain vitamins that help combat discoloration and peptides that help plump up the thin skin to help eliminate shadows.
Q: Why does my undereye area get so puffy?
A: The puffiness is caused by fluid buildup. This can be caused by a poor diet, too much alcohol consumption, sleep deprivation, stress, and natural aging. To help combat puffiness, eye formulas contain ingredients that help reduce the swelling, like aloe or lavender. (Mindful’s Anti-Aging Serum contains both!) Puffiness can also be caused by seasonal allergies; if you suspect that’s the case for you, try an antihistamine. Mindful’s serum is vegan, gluten-free, and paraben-free, so it shouldn’t exacerbate any allergic reactions.
Q: What can I do about these fine lines? Where do they come from?
A: Well, the undereyeskin is pretty thin, so when you use the muscles underneath (like for smiling or blinking), it’s naturally going to show signs of age a little faster than the thicker skin on the rest of your face. You definitely don’t want to stop smiling or blinking, though, so using an eye serum or cream can help with those fine lines. Look for ingredients that build collagen and help smooth out the lines.
Q: Should I use eye formulas just at night?
A: Some eye creams can be used twice a day, like under makeup. But the folks at Mindful suggest using their Anti-Aging Serum just at night. In fact, they advise that you apply it at least 30 minutes before sleep, to give the serum time to fully absorb. Remember to always apply eye formulas by patting them on using yourweakest finger—the ring finger. The pressure from your index finger or middle finger could be strong enough to further damage the delicate skin.
